In June, 57 racks were installed, bringing the total number of racks on the street to 650. The Department of Transportation's Office of Bicycle Program hopes to install 1692 racks between now and the new millennium and is still accepting suggested locations. This overdue push to get the racks out of storage and on the street is encouraging, as is the focus on locations in the outer boroughs and at subway connection points. Nevertheless, the DOTs CityRacks program promises to hire a contractor by this spring to install nearly 1,700 bike racks already requested.
