July 1st, 2019: Reflection, Not Reflectors

Warm and sunny cycling conditions today:

Monday Weather

Monday Sunny, with a high near 83. North wind 6 to 8 mph.

Monday Night A 20 percent chance of showers after midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 71. West wind 5 to 7 mph.

Sunrise: 5:28am

Sunset: 8:31pm

You'll also make much better time on the bike than you will on the bus thanks to Arthur "We have a Yuba" Schwartz:

The court ruling means that for the first time in 11 years, Select Bus Service will operate without the dedicated bus lanes that have dramatically increased bus speeds & reliability around NYC.

He's throwing bus riders under the bus to "save" the Village.

Meanwhile, be on the alert for aggressive and retaliatory ticketing on the Manhattan side of the Manhattan Bridge:

What a waste.  It's safe to say a lack of reflectors in broad daylight was not a factor in any of the 14 cyclist deaths we've seen so far this year:

The number of deaths here is right but the names are not; Fernando Trejo, killed on 3rd Ave. in Brooklyn in January, was a pedestrian.  And Robert Sommer, killed by a driver while riding a bicycle in Marine Park, Brooklyn in May, is not mentioned.

Regardless, here are the circumstances in which these deaths occurred:

Ten of the fourteen cyclists lost their lives in Brooklyn crashes.

Eight of the cyclists crashed in the dark, or after sunset and before sunrise. The remaining six died during rush hours, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. or between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Two of the cyclists were doored, three struck by hit-and-run drivers (not including Hightman who was hit by a truck driver who left and returned), five were hit by trucks and one was killed by a drunken driver.

Also, every single one of them was killed by a driver.

No wonder we're never among the best cycling cities in the world:

Wired

In fact, the only two North American cities on the list are in Canada.

Meanwhile, here in New York:

And yes, there's a petition for that.

Unfortunately it's easier to ticket people for not having reflectors than it is to reflect on what the real problem is.
