The back and forth over the Kent Avenue bike lanes has continued over the last several weeks. This coming Tuesday is the first full meeting of Community Board 1 since the dispute erupted, and we need a strong showing of supporters to make the biggest possible impression on the board leadership. Please attend this critical meeting, and sign up to make a brief 2-minute statement during the public comment period to back up this critical safety improvement.

The Kent Avenue bike lanes were installed by the DOT this fall as the precursor to a fully-wrought Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. They run between Clymer and Quay Streets in Williamsburg, and have greatly improved safety for bicyclists and pedestrians on this dangerous truck route. Because the innovative design necessitated the removal of parking, there has been substantial pushback from drivers who can no longer park on Kent Avenue and must utilize side streets instead. CB1 and the DOT have continued to avail new parking and loading zones to ensure minimal disruption, but opposition has not backed down. Recently, the transportation chair of CB1, a strong supporter of the lanes, was removed from her post. At this point, it is critical to make a strong impression on the board that this lane enjoys strong support.
