Broadway/Green Light for Midtown Open House

On March 11, come out and show support for the plan to decrease congestion and reclaim space for pedestrians and bicyclists in Midtown!

If you have ever been one of the more than 356,000 pedestrians who walk through Times Square daily, you probably know how chaotic, congested, and unsafe the surrounding streets are for anyone not in a car. The Department of Transportation released a plan last week to reclaim Broadway from 47-42nd Streets and at Herald Square from cars and increase pedestrian space, build protected bike lanes, and add 3 acres of open space for pedestrians and cyclists.

On March 11th, from 2 -- 5 PM, DOT will hold an Open House to discuss their plans for improving pedestrian safety, extending the city's bike network and calming traffic on one of NYC's busiest streets. DOT staff will be on-hand to discuss the project and answer questions from residents, businesses and other stakeholders all afternoon.

There are 4.5 times as many people as vehicles in Times and Herald Squares, but only 11% of the space is currently allocated for pedestrians. As a result, Broadway at Times Square averages 137% more pedestrian crashes than at other avenues in the area. DOT needs to hear from the majority of non-car owners and drivers who will benefit most from these plans. We hope to see you there!

If you can't make this event, DOT will also be presenting at various mid-town locations 3/12, 3/16, and 3/18 -- for details see DOT events calendar: http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.e2d70d4cd03b6dd1d3e3711042289da0
