Congestion pricing is the most controversial portion of PlaNYC, but it is also the best way to fund $30 billion in vital transportation improvements and give New Yorkers much-needed traffic relief. PlaNYC is supported by a diverse coalition of over 130 environmental, public health, labor, civic, business and community-based organizations and millions of New Yorkers.

The State legislature must take action before the end of this session (which closes on Thursday) or New York City will miss out on a large federal grant to implement congestion pricing.

After holding multiple meetings in every borough and consulting with hundreds of New Yorkers, community leaders, advocates and businesses, Mayor Bloomberg released the plan on April 22nd, Earth Day. I'm writing to you today to ask that the Assembly help in the effort to improve New York City and the region by taking action on PlaNYC before adjourning for summer recess. This comprehensive plan aims to prepare New York City for the addition of 1 million more residents in the next two decades and to remedy problems that already degrade our health, economy and quality of life and will be exacerbated by the population growth if nothing is done. It includes 127 initiatives that address land use, housing, open space, brownfields, water quality, water network, congestion, the transportation network, energy, air quality and climate change. The plan includes goals and implementation benchmarks. It is a detailed plan and has been reviewed by residents, businesses and activists in every borough. As a New Yorker, I support the immediate benefits PlaNYC will bring to the city and the region. As someone who cares deeply for the city, I support this long-terming planning effort because I want my children and their children to have a high quality of life and live in a healthy, green, safe and vibrant city. And, as someone who believes that New York should be a world leader in tackling global issues like climate change, I hope you will heed the call to take action and lead by taking action on PlaNYC before the end of this session.
