Congestion Pricing Hearings Come to YOUR Borough--Speak Out! |
|
At town hall meetings across the City, New Yorkers have shown their passion for better transit through congestion pricing. The Commission needs to hear from you! Photo courtesy Clark Jones
|
Last winter, Mayor Bloomberg asked New Yorkers like you to step forward and give input on the City's new sustainability plan, PlaNYC. T.A. members and StreetBeat readers turned out by the hundreds to those public hearings, and ensured that better biking, safer streets and congestion pricing became cornerstones of that plan.
Now, we need you to step forward again. The Congestion Mitigation Commission was appointed by the State to review congestion pricing, and make recommendations about implementing the plan. The 17-member body will soon decide the fate of pricing and the hundreds of millions of dollars in transit funding that pricing will unlock. They are holding public hearings in every borough, and in Westchester and Nassau counties; we need you to attend and make the voice of New York's transit-taking supermajority heard. Don't let the drivers opposed to paying for cleaner air, better transit and less traffic steal the show and cost our city a greener future. Attend a hearing in your home borough and speak out!
Tell them you demand:
- Better transit paid for by congestion pricing
- A "transit lockbox" for pricing revenues
And make sure they understand:
- Passing a congestion pricing plan is the ONLY way to secure the 367 new buses and $354 million promised by the federal government.

Bike Parking Bill Circles City Hall, Looks for a Good Spot |
|
|
New legislation could make indoor bike parking a more common experience for commuters.
|
The City committed to pursuing "legislation to require that large commercial buildings make provisions for bicycle storage either on site or reasonably nearby" in the transportation section of PlaNYC. In recent months, City agencies have begun to hammer out details of this legislation. A soon-to-be-public omnibus bike parking bill is the result. It will not only address the issue of indoor bike parking, but will also clarify outdoor bike parking laws and the protocol for identifying and removing abandoned bicycles.
For years Transportation Alternatives has been working hard to bring attention to the desperate need for better bike parking in NYC. We need to create new bike parking options, to affirm cyclists' right to park at street fixtures and to create rules that allow commuters to bring their bikes inside. To that end, T.A. is continuing to compile a list NYC's best and worst stories relating to indoor bike parking.
Please send us details about your indoor bike parking facility, photos included. If you want indoor bike parking but have been denied it, please also send us your story and we will add you to a growing list of New Yorkers to get involved when the City releases its legislation. All submissions should be directed to bike@transalt.org.

Put the Brakes on Speeding |
|
|
Is speeding a problem on your neighborhood streets? We want to help.
|
Speeding and aggressive driving significantly contribute to the more than 10,000 pedestrian and cyclist injuries and 190 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities that occur on NYC streets each year. Although traffic safety statistics have improved in recent years, these two dangerous behaviors are still all too common.
This fall, T.A. will make the case for speeding enforcement and traffic calming measures throughout the five boroughs, by partnering with schools, community groups and concerned residents. We will measure and highlight the extent of speeding and dangerous driving on neighborhood streets, garner media attention, and build relationships to advocate for enforcement and concrete solutions.
If your community has a speeding or dangerous driving problem, talk about it with your neighbors and get T.A. on the case. Email will@transalt.org.
