“The Gates” Lets in a Flood of Car-Free Park Supporters
As Mayor Bloomberg celebrates an estimated four million visitors to Central Park and $254 million in economic activity generated by Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Gates, Transportation Alternatives is celebrating other numbers: 10,000 new signatures on the petition for a car-free Central Park loop drive and over 1,000 faxes and postcards thanking the Mayor for restricting car access to the park during the exhibit. Thanks to you, we are now just fewer than 15,000 signatures away from presenting our full petition to Mayor Bloomberg—and he is expecting it! Let’s deliver! Download a petition today, collect signatures and mail or fax it back to T.A. Dump the Bumps
Thanks to rapid-fire T.A. organizing, great press coverage and over 50 people who packed the room at February 22nd’s Community Board 3 Transportation Committee meeting, the NYC DOT finally agreed to look at replacing the dangerous expansion joint covers on the Williamsburg Bridge path and devise solutions to make it safer for walkers, bikers and disabled people. By studying the replacement options, it is implied that the DOT will implement the safest alternative to the existing two-inch high metal bumps. No timeframe was given, so stay tuned to transalt.org for progress reports. Over 3,000 people use the Williamsburg Bridge path each day. A fall 2004 T.A. survey found that the bridge path’s bumps caused 23% of users to crash, 64% of bridge users to lose control of their bicycles or trip and 74% of bridge users to suffer damages to their bikes and other property. You can take the survey at transalt.org/wbsurvey. T.A. asks that everyone who bikes and walks across the Williamsburg Bridge do so safely and responsibly. Speeding down the bridge path can endanger walkers and other bikers. And, though the majestic views are captivating, please remember to be aware of other bridge users walking and biking past you. Dear Reader, Imagine a New York City with 40% less driving and 40% more bicycling and walking. Imagine all New Yorkers, young and old, breathing clean air and enjoying the freedom of safe streets. In a nutshell, this is T.A.’s vision. And for reasons ranging from obesity prevention to energy security to a more robust economy, our vision is shared by an increasingly diverse array of New Yorkers. Right now there are two simple things you can do to help make this vision a reality. 1) Complete our reader survey. Your answers will help improve future editions of this bulletin so that we reach an even wider audience. (Today this bulletin is being read by approximately 40,000 subscribers) 2) Join Transportation Alternatives today. It takes continued advocacy and coalition building to win the types of victories we describe in these e-bulletins. With your support I’m confident we can make significant progress towards making NYC a better place for walking and bicycling. The New York City we want is within our grasp. Sincerely, Come to the Volunteer Mailing Party, Wednesday, March 30th at 6 pm at the T.A. Office (115 West 30th, #1207)! Free beer, soda, snacks and scintillating conversation.
