The horrific London terrorist attacks and the subsequent elevation of the terror threat alert for mass transit systems in the United States have made many New Yorkers jittery about taking the subway and bus. The City should expect that many people will want to use other options to get to work and around town in the next few weeks, including riding a bicycle.

Now, more than ever, the City should make sure that bicyclists are safe and secure by convening a "tiger team" to take action to prevent yet more killing of bicyclists on our city streets. We can keep our city moving and thriving by taking immediate action to make bicycle commuting a real, safe option for all New Yorkers.

Television is most often the antithesis of bicycling: passive, boring and saturated with car ads. Not so with BikeTV. For proof, check out some recent shows:

Make Streets Safe for Bicycling!
T.A. Presses City Hall to Stop the Killing of Bicyclists

Ten people have been killed and over 880 have been injured while bicycling on the streets of New York City so far in 2005. On June 22, a right turning truck driver killed 25-year-old Andrew Morgan, the tenth and latest victim, as he biked to work on Houston Street.

How many of these tragedies could have been prevented?

  • Each of the four most recent fatalities occurred on City-recommended bike routes that are, despite their designation as "bike routes," completely devoid of bicycling facilities and traffic calming measures.
  • As the number of bicyclists in New York City has increased, the number of staff members at the DOT's bicycle and traffic calming departments has decreased.

T.A. is outraged by the killing of bicyclists. We are working with a host of city bike groups, including the Five Borough Bicycle Club, FreeWheels, New York Bicycle Messenger Foundation, Right of Way, Staten Island Bicycle Association and Times Up!, to demand that City Hall take action to stop the killing. Together, we unveiled our recommendations for making bicycling safe at a City Hall vigil and rally on June 16th. These include boosting the City's capacity to plan and build bicycle routes, reviewing and updating the City's 1997 "Bicycle Master Plan," and adopting new and stronger design standards for biking routes.
