Dear Reader,
Because this year’s NYC Century Bike Tour happens to fall on September 11, some of us at T.A. (including me) were worried that many riders would stay away.
Just the opposite is happening. Riders are registering early and in record numbers proving that there is no better way to celebrate the vitality of New York City than by experiencing its wonderful diversity up close with 5,000 fellow cyclists.
Riders on this year’s 16th Annual Tour will enjoy all of the same benefits that made last year’s ride a joy, but with extra perks like organic snacks, organic cotton t-shirts and some great new changes to the route. As with previous tours, you will also enjoy the pride of knowing that you are providing vital support for T.A.’s advocacy to make our great city more bikeable and less fossil fuel dependent.
See you at the tour!
Sincerely,
Paul
Steely White
Executive Director
P.S. Riders registering today will save money with our early registration discount and be entered into a special drawing to win a $150 gift certificate to Spokes and Strings or Bicycle Habitat. The winner will be announced in the next e-bulletin.

Deadly Traffic!
Join the Vigil Ride to City Hall

At 8 am on Thursday, June 16th, Transportation Alternatives and an alliance of New York City bicycle groups* will embark on a Vigil Ride from 5th Avenue and Warren Street in Brooklyn to the steps of City Hall to memorialize Elizabeth Padilla, Brandie Bailey, Jerome Allen and the 201 other NYC bicyclists killed since 1995. According to data recently released by the NYPD, a total of 9 cyclists have been killed by motorists this year, representing a 50% increase in fatalities over the same period in 2004. Elizabeth, 28, a pro-bono attorney, was crushed by a large delivery truck on 5th Ave. and Warren St. in Park Slope on June 9.
On the steps of City Hall at 9am the alliance will lay down flowers in memory of the 204 fallen cyclists and ask Mayor Bloomberg to convene a multi-agency task force to develop-- in cooperation with the NYC cycling community-- an action plan to prevent further deaths and injuries.
* Transportation Alternatives, Time’s Up!, Right Of Way, the New York City Bicycle Messenger Association, and FreeWheels. If you represent a group that is interested in joining this alliance, please email info@transalt.org
Great Summer Job!
See NYC, Create History
New Yorkers know intuitively that too much car and truck traffic ruins our quality of life, but does the evidence support it? Thirty years ago, a famous study by Donald Appleyard in San Francisco found that too much motorized traffic erodes our communities and social networks. This summer, T.A. is updating the study right here in New York.

Tour de Brooklyn = Tour de Force

The vanguard of the Tour de Brooklyn’s 1800+ rider peloton enjoy a car-free Ocean Parkway.
From the opening ceremony featuring Borough Presidents Marty Markowitz and Adofo Carrión, to riding on a car-free Ocean Parkway, to the splendors of Coney Island, to the swinging after party at Habana Outpost, the first annual Tour de Brooklyn was by all accounts an amazing amount of fun. Made possible by the support and cooperation of government, business community, and law enforcement, it was also an amazing display of how powerful a force bicycling has become in the Borough that bikes.

Kathryn Herzog, an early registrant for the Tour de Brooklyn, is the winner of the 1st Annual Tour de Brooklyn Free Brooklyn Brewery Beer for a Year contest!
Congratulations Kathryn and enjoy! (and remember: don’t drive!)

Downtown Cyclists Beware!
Parks Enforcement Patrol, the Department of Parks and Recreation's law enforcement agency, has begun seizing bicycles locked to bike racks overnight in Battery Park City parks, citing a misapplied regulation that prohibits the storing of private property in city parks. We are working diligently with Parks Legal Department to address this error, but in the meantime, keep clear of BPC parks bike racks at night. If your bike has already been confiscated, contact PEP at 212-417-3100 to reclaim it. There is a $25 fine.
