City Council Hears a Landmark Traffic Relief Bill
Crowd at the 199 Press Conference
Supporters gathered at a pre-hearing press conference on the City Hall Steps.
On Thursday, January 25th, the NYC City Council Transportation Committee held a hearing on Intro, 199, the Traffic Information and Relief Bill. By the hearings end, this landmark bill which seeks to "reduce the proportion of driving to the central business districts and increase the proportion of walking, biking and the use of mass transit" was co-sponsored by more than half of the Transportation Committee and 24 individual Councilmembers.

Top-tier advocacy organizations, neighborhood groups, committed community activists, think-tanks, chambers of commerce and transportation experts all testified in favor of the bill. The New York City DOT supported the bill's sentiment, but stood as the only vociferous opposition.

In the coming weeks there will be more hearings on Intro. 199. Of course, we'll keep you posted and let you know how you can help bring traffic relief to NYC.

Take Action: On Wednesday, January 31st from 6-7:30 pm, come to the T.A. office for a Traffic Relief Party. We will be calling Councilmembers to educate them about Intro. 199, eating pizza and listening to old school traffic jams.

Or call your Councilmember on your own time to let them know that Intro. 199 is a sensible and cost-effective way to help unsnarl New York City's traffic.

Hundreds Mourn Cyclists & Pedestrians Killed in 2006

Audrey Anderson, whose son Andre was killed in 2005, inspired the crowd at the ride's finish.
On January 7th, 2007 hundreds of New York City cyclists rode together through the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn to honor the cyclists and pedestrians who were killed on NYC streets in 2006. Organized by Time's Up!, Visual Resistance and T.A. and supported by Bikes Now, the Five Borough Bike Club, the New York Bike Messenger Association, Recycle-a-Bicycle, Right of Way, the Weekday Cyclists and other members of the NYC Bike Coalition, the 2nd Annual Memorial Ride was a united call to Mayor Bloomberg to make city streets safe for bikers and walkers.

Ride leaders called on Mayor Bloomberg to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety by increasing police enforcement of dangerous drivers and to promote cycling by creating more protected space for riding.

Sustainable NYC: We Can't Wait Until 2030
Streetsfilms: The Case for Separated Bike Lanes
Protected bike lanes are just one of the many quick fixes that could help make NYC more sustainable.
Don't forget to give Mayor Bloomberg feedback on his plan for a sustainable NYC by 2030 at the PLANYC website. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the polcies that will govern the city of our future and it should not be missed.

And while you're making suggestions, don't forget to let the Mayor know it's smart to start now. In last weeks's T.A. E-Bulletin, Transportation Alternatives listed four steps that the Mayor could make by 2009 that would help lay the foundation for a sustainable future.

  • Parking reform
  • Expanded Bus Rapid Transit network
  • Better bike infrastructure
  • Streets designed for seniors

These long overdue commonsense improvements in making NYC more livable before the Mayor leaves office will put NYC on the right track fo 2030.

Thanks to JCN on flickr.com for tagging his bicycling photos "TransAlt."
Are you a photographer? Here's an easy way to help Transportation Alternatives (and maybe get a photo credit in the process). When you upload your bicycling and walking photos from NYC to Flickr tag them with TransAlt. We'll be compiling these photos for use in upcoming e-bulletins, Transportation Alternatives Magazine and our soon to be redesigned website.

We need tons of great photos of people bicycling and walking in all five boroughs. For complete photo guidelines and details about photo credit please see our photo guidelines (pdf). Thanks in advance for your help.
