Just 10% of intersections in the city were responsible for over half of the pedestrian injuries and deaths during the past decade, a pedestrian advocacy group said at City Hall rally Sunday."People are being killed because they are being hit by cars," said Rachael Myers, whose fiance was killed by a speeding motor vehicle on the Upper East Side in 2004. "No public officials want to talk about it. We need leadership on this issue."The rally, organized by Transportation Alternatives, came on a weekend in which cars killed three pedestrians in the city. The group called for stricter penalties for motorists who hit pedestrians and more traffic calming measures on the city's streets."The mayor has shown he can tackle big problems," said Noah Budnick, deputy director for advocacy at Transportation Alternatives. "We know he can fix the streets from this Wild West atmosphere to a safe place for the young and old and disabled to get around safely."More than 10,000 pedestrians are injured each year on the city's streets, and 170 were killed in 2006. Advocates maintain that simple design measures, such as raising crosswalks and expanding sidewalks at dangerous corners could drastically reduce the number of accidents. Transportation Alternatives aims for 2,000 fewer injuries on the city's streets by 2009.Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kay Sarlin said in a statement: "Though 2006 was one of the safest years on record for pedestrians in New York City, in the wake of several tragic accidents it clear that more needs top be done and DOT is committed to taking further steps to makes the streets as safe as possible."The issue of pedestrian safety was brought into stark relief last month when 4-year-old James Jacaricce of Brooklyn was struck and killed by an SUV. on his way home from school with his aunt. His grandfather, James St. John, addressed the rally."We teach them from before they know how to walk to look both ways then they cross the street," he said. "Then they go out into the world and someone takes their life.
