Additional red-light cameras are key to decreasing the number of traffic-related accidents and deaths in the city, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday."An awful lot of deaths occur at the corner, particularly among seniors," Bloomberg said. "And red-light cameras are proven to stop people from running red lights."Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall is expected to lobby for more red-light cameras when she testifies in Albany today.More than half of pedestrian deaths occur at just 10% of city intersections, according to data released Sunday by Transportation Alternatives, a pedestrian advocacy group. Last year, 163 people on foot were killed by vehicles.Weinshall also will testify in support of a bill that would require certain large trucks to have convex mirrors, also known as crossover mirrors, that would help eliminate truckers' "blind spots."
