A coalition of more than 70 organizations and individuals, calling themselves the Campaign for New York’s Future, has issued a statement of support for Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC proposal to make New York City environmentally sustainable. The coalition said the statement: "Our goal is to make every neighborhood in NYC a great place to live and work, as well as make a significant contribution to fighting climate change. The coalition aims to encourage public debate - as well as fair and effective action - now and in the years to come. We recognize the need to both seize the opportunity for immediate action and to insure that this long-term plan evolves with continued dialogue and changing conditions."The coalition seems unusually broad, perhaps reflecting advance work by Mayor Bloomberg’s aides to drum up his support for the plan. The members of the coalition include the AARP, the American Institute of Architects, the American Lung Association, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, the Citizens Budget Commission, Environmental Defense, the General Contractors Association, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the New York City Central Labor Council, the New York Immigration Coalition, the Partnership for New York City, the Regional Plan Association, Transportation Alternatives. The Straphangers Campaign, part of the New York Public Interest Research Group, is helping to organize the coalition.
