Cycling Advocates And Transportation Officials Mark Bike Month
The Department of Transportation and Transportation Alternatives are working together this month to promote biking in the city in honor of Bike Month.Transportation Alternatives says there are about 120,000 people who ride their bicycles through the city every day, including about 40,000 who bike to work. And, they say, they would like to see even more people start pedaling."It helps save money, definitely, and cuts down on air pollution," said Dani Simons of Transportation Alternatives. "It can improve your personal health and it's just a really fun way to get around town. It's great. You have control over your own destiny, no more waiting for subways or buses; no more trying to find a parking space.""We just want New Yorkers to get out there and try a new way of getting around town," said Department of Transportation bike program Director Josh Benson. "There are a lot of events for people of all different ability levels who may not feel that comfortable on a bike. There are events in parks. There are group rides and other ways to get your feet wet."
