The sport and pastime is especially promoted in May, known as New York City Bike Month.Bike Month began in 1990 as a one-day celebration. Over the years, the two-wheel worship was extended to a week and recently, to a month full of activities.The popularity of bicycling is growing. According to the group Transportation Alternatives, 112,000 New Yorkers bicycle on an average day. That’s an increase of more than 10 percent in the past decade. And with the cardiovascular workout bikes offer, it’s a trend worth joining.So whether you’re a Lance Armstrong type or a beginner, there is an activity for you.Don’t have a bike? The NYC cycling map lists bike rental sites throughout the boroughs. Visit www.nyc.gov or call 311 to get a map.Don’t know to ride a bike? Learn or practice with one of the workshops taking place throughout the city. Visit www.BikeMonthNYC.org or call 311.Think helmets are uncool? You’re not on the red carpet--and there’s nothing uncooler than a head injury. The New York City Department of Transportation offers bicycle helmets and fitting. Call 311 to schedule an appointment.Interested in some sightseeing? The New York City cycling map shows on-street bicycle routes, bicycle lanes, and off-street paths throughout the city.Of course, bicyclists are not limited to the city. Through Metronorth, you can get a bicycle permit--only $10.00--hop on a train and head for a ride along the Hudson.
