The city Department of Transportation wants Staten Islanders to leave their gas-guzzlers at home -- in favor of bike pedal power. And to make it easier to get around, 10 new bike racks will be installed at Staten Island Railway park and rides, to create healthy and environmentally friendly "bike and rides." The racks will be installed in mid-July at the Great Kills, Bay Terrace, Dongan Hills, Huguenot and South Beach park and ride lots."We're trying to get people out of their cars," and this will give people more incentive, said borough DOT Commissioner Tom Curitore. Soon, Staten Islanders can "bike to the bike and ride, hop on a train and get to work," he said."There is a huge amount of people who want to use their bikes and not as many places to accommodate parking," said Caroline Samponaro, bicycle campaign coordinator for Transportation Alternatives, a public transit, pedestrian, and bicycling advocacy group.Ms. Samponaro estimated there is currently only one bike rack for every 40 cyclists in the city, which deters a lot of riders who would otherwise bike to public transit. While Ms. Samponaro recommended that all cyclists get a good lock before leaving their bikes at the bike and ride, she said the city's upside-down U-rack design is "really solid," with room to secure more than one part of the bike to the rack at once. But before you get on a roll, you've got to get the gear. The DOT is also holding two helmet-fitting events as part of its Get FIT-TED campaign. Free bike helmets will be distributed at Safety City on the grounds of the Petrides Educational Complex in Sunnyside, Thursday from 2-4 p.m., and July 3 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Both adult and child sizes are available.
