Residents: Houston Becoming Street of Death
By Justin Rocket Silverman
With six lanes of high speed traffic and an ongoing $30 million road construction project, Houston Street has become a danger to Greenwich Village residents, according to the more than two dozen who rallied Wednesday near the site of a recent fatal accident."An old lady like me, when I cross that street to visit my son, I'm taking my life into my hands," said protestor Connie Masullo, 80, a resident of LaGuardia Place on the north side of Houston. Her son works at SoHo Wine and Spirits on the south side of the street.Protestors were joined by Councilman Alan Gerson (D-Manhattan), who said a lawsuit has been filed in State Supreme Court to halt the city's construction project on Houston. Of particular concern is a new pedestrian median that is much smaller than the old one and could have trouble accommodating many pedestrians or even a single wheelchair-bound person, protestors said.ouston "is another tragedy waiting to happen," Gerson said. The City's Department of Transportation, which has fielded years of criticism over the Houston Street project, declined to comment on the recent lawsuit, and referred questions to the city's law department. A spokeswoman there said the law department cannot comment on pending litigation. The DOT also declined to comment on state figures that show 11 pedestrians were killed and 514 injured on Houston Street in crashes with cars from 1995-2005. An additional three cyclists were killed on Houston in the same period, the data show. It is unclear how the statistics compare with other city streets."Houston Street stands out as one of New York's deadliest streets for pedestrians and bicyclists," said Wiley Norvell, a spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group."The street cries out for safety improvements, and unfortunately current reconstruction plans focus on moving cars rather than keeping walkers and bikers safe."Recent deaths on Houston9/25/07- Hope Miller, 28, was killed crossing the street by a truck making a right onto Houston from Sixth Avenue.6/26/06- Derek Lake, 23, was killed when his bicycle was run over by a truck on Houston, near LaGuardia.6/22/05- Andrew Morgan, 25, was killed when his bicycle was run over by a truck on Houston near Elizabeth.5/8/05- Brandie Bailey, 21, was killed when her bicycle was run over by a truck on Houston near Avenue A. The truck driver drove 23 blocks before being pulled over by police and informed he had hit a cyclist.
