About 40 bicycles were parked helter-skelter on the broad marble steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall while their owners enjoyed breakfast Tuesday with Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrating May Bike Month NYC.

Half of the cyclists gathered at Grand Army Plaza and pedaled to the Downtown hall at the suggestion of Transportation Alternatives. That organization, a very strong advocate of bicycling, distributed a booklet describing rides and other related events taking place in the city in May.

Among Transportation Alternatives’ goals are more bike lanes in city streets, more greenways, easier bicycle access to bridges and public transportation, more enforcement of traffic infractions against bicyclists, congestion pricing, and a car-free Prospect Park (and Central Park). After the breakfast, the cyclists pedaled over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. Among upcoming Brooklyn events are:

Volunteer Night, May 7, 7 to 9 p.m. Work with bike mechanics at Recycle-A-Cycle, 35 Pearl St. DUMBO.

Swift Folder open house, May 8, 6 to 8 p.m. Visit the tiny shop at 280 Nevins St, Gowanus, where Swift folding bikes are made.

Traffic Calming Ride in Prospect Park, May 9, 6 to 9 p.m. Meet at Grand Army Plaza entrance.

Ride a 'Bent-Raise a Buck, May 10, 8 to 11 a.m. Prospect Park. $20 demo rides on recumbent design bikes by Innovation Works Inc.

Moonlight Ride Prospect Park, May 10, 9 to 11 p.m. Meet at Grand Army Plaza entrance
