Date: 07/10/2008 BOROUGH HALL -- Wednesday, Borough President Marty Markowitz entered a press conference here on a bicycle as Queen's "Bicycle Race" played on the loudspeaker. Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Caroline Samponaro of Bicycle Advocacy for Transportation Alternatives joined Markowitz, announcing Brooklyn Borough Hall's new "bicycle program." Two bicycles will be added to Borough Hall's existing fleet of hybrid vehicles. "Being ‘green' starts at home -- and that includes the home of city government," Markowitz said. Borough Hall employees will now have more "green" transportation choices when conducting official business. Markowitz hopes Borough Hall's efforts will influence government agencies and private businesses citywide. "We are implementing a ‘cycle of change,'" he said. Markowitz also urged all Brooklyn residents to commute by bicycle to their place of work when possible, stressing that as well as being healthy for the environment, it is also a great way to stay physically healthy. Markowitz admires those Brooklyn residents he already sees cycling on city streets. "I ride my bicycle to work," he told the Eagle later. "Not often, but I have before -- it's true."
