For the second year in a row, the M34 has been name the slowest bus route in New York City.At a ceremony here yesterday morning, the M34 was dishonored with the Pokey Award for its slow-motion service from Jackson Heights to Penn Station. The bus would occasionally lumber through the crosstown traffic as a tuxedo-clad rider advocate accepted the prize on the bus's behalf."I'm here to speak for the M34," said Gene Russianoff, staff attorney for the New York Public Interest Research Group's Straphangers Campaign. "I would also like to say a special thanks to the riders, who spent a lot of time — I mean A LOT of time — with me, probably more than they would want."Russianoff and Paul Steely White, director of Transportation Alternatives, presented the findings of their fourth annual survey of 23 bus routes and suggested strategies to improve service. Russianoff challenged the mayoral candidates to come up with their own plans."There's a lot our city officials could do," said White, who advocated wider bus lanes, pre-boarding fare payment and traffic signals that give priority to buses, not cars. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's agency NYC Transit responded that it has already partnered with the city's Department of Transportation on a "bus rapid transit" study that will aim to improve bus travel. The MTA's capital program has also earmarked $22 million to implement improvements.Until then, Russianoff could only offer riders the following advice: "Bring a book."
