For the last two weeks, the NYPD says it has stepped up a crackdown on illegally parked cars Downtown, issuing more tickets and towing more cars illegally parked in Chinatown. The move from police follows years of complaints by residents and business owners. Parking spots are few and far between in the area. Some of the cars are even owned by city employees. A study by the group Transportation Alternatives found many illegally parked cars in the area have city-issued parking permits."I don't think it's something that we can solve overnight," said NYPD Deputy Inspector Michael Lau. "We have to make some compromises. But we're here to make sure that we don't really infringe on the safety issues, hydrants and stuff like that. That's a major issue for us."NY1 will profile Lau and his growing impact in Chinatown on Monday as NY1's weeklong tribute to Asian-American heritage kicks off.
