"Cars In Prospect Park Is No Picnic"

Brooklyn families protest cars in the park with a "mock" picnic

July 1, 1998

GREAT VISUAL - Families and pets will picnic along side of speeding cars.

What: Protest/Picnic
When: Wednesday, July 1- 5:30-6:30 PM
Where: Grassy triangle inside Grand Army plaza entrance, Prospect Park

Fed up with noisy, polluting, deadly cars zooming through Prospect Park, hundreds Brooklyn residents will gather to show what the park really is - a place for celebrations, picnics and families. The goal of the event is to draw attention the dangerous policy that mixes speeding cars with runners, cyclists and walkers on the Park's Loop Drive. Amidst the rush hour traffic, picnickers will demonstrate the absurdity of permitting cars in Prospect Park.

Additionally, participants will call upon Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden and Prospect Park Administrator Tupper Thomas to support a two-month trial closing. The four Councilmembers surrounding the park, Stephen DiBrienza, Ken Fisher, Una Clarke and Angel Rodriguez, all support a two-month trial closing.
