Statement on Replacing Central Park Horse Carriages with Model Ts
Transportation Alternatives strongly opposes the proposal to replace Central Park's horse-drawn carriages with Model T Fords. Cars are currently only permitted on the west loop drive from 7 am to 9 am and on the east loop drive from 5 pm to 7 pm. Adding motor vehicle traffic to Central Park, particularly if they are permitted to remain on the loop during car-free hours, would pose a serious safety hazard to the hundreds of thousands of pedestrians, joggers, cyclists and park-goers who use the park each day. More than 103,500 New Yorkers have signed the petition for a car-free Central Park, and five of the six City Council members with districts adjacent to the park have endorsed a three month car-free trial period. "It doesn't matter whether these cars run on gas, soy beans or sunshine. More car traffic in New York City's crown jewel park is not an answer," says Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. ###
