Transportation Alternatives applauds Speaker Sheldon Silver and the New York State Assembly for reauthorizing and expanding New York City's red light camera legislation. At intersections where these cameras have been installed, pedestrian injuries have dropped by 40% and severe injuries have dropped 22%. The expansion of this program to include Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Nassau County and Suffolk County not only means that more communities will have the ability to effectively deter dangerous red light running; it means more allies in the fight for automated enforcement to curb reckless driving.
