New York City Council Transportation Committee hearing on Intro 195: Taxicab Advisory Board: Modifications Suggested by Transportation Alternatives

June 20, 2002

Intro 195 proposes to create a drivers' advisory board to advise the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Transportation Alternatives urges the Council to specifically include traffic safety advocates and passenger advocates as members of the advisory board. These non-partisan members are essential to ensure that the advisory board and the TLC address the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and the general public as well as taxicab passengers. In addition to taxicab safety, the proposed advisory board should examine work conditions, driver training, safety education, enforcement and driver licensing. These matters directly effect driver performance and street safety, and it is necessary that non-partisan traffic safety and passenger advocates and experts are included on the advisory board.

Thank you.
