May/June 1994, p.4 Good News and Uncertainty For 42d St. Light Rail In an overwhelming 10-1 vote, the City Planning Commission approved light rail on 42d St. The next stop in the approval process is a late May date with the City Council. Hopefully, fight rail on 42d St will lead to light rail on 1st Avenue and then eventually to a citywide restoration of the old trolley network. Enlightened self interest has led the NY State Power Authority to promise $8 million in credit for infrastructure construction and an exclusive agreement to provide power to the trolley. The $8 million can be parlayed into up to $30 million in Federal matching grants. However, before this money can be spent the Mayor's budget must include $700,000 for street surveys and planning. If you want light rail on 42d Street write: Mayor Rudolph Giuliani City Hall, Now York, NY 10007. |
