Walking News

New York is perfect for walking except for the cars. We know how unpleasant it can be just to walk a few blocks, and we are working hard to change that. Our pedestrian campaign is focused on:

  • Safer streets- tougher laws for dangerous drivers, and more police enforcement.
  • Curbing dangerous taxi and limo drivers with stronger laws.
  • Pedestrian rights: D.A.'s & the police must charge and prosecute drivers who kill and injure pedestrians. Pedestrian right of way in crosswalks should be a sacred thing.
  • Traffic calming and an end to the City's car-first mentality.

NYC Police Ignore Pedestrian safety

In 1993, the New York City Police Department gave out a total of 529 summonses to motorists who failed to yield to pedestrians, fewer than 1.5 each day. Seattle, a city with far fewer pedestrians, gave out over 5,000 such tickets. Sadly, many of the tickets given out in NYC were to motorists who had already hit a pedestrian. This makes Giuliani's plan to eliminate "brownies" and turn all traffic enforcement over to police that much more frightening.

Where We Hate To Walk

Herald Square - A dangerous madhouse; wrong way traffic, rabid cabbies, brain dead traffic cops.

Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park - A traffic Circle from hell. Have fun crossing Eastern Parkway!
