This week the International Olympic Committee evaluation commission is in town conducting its final assessment of New York City’s 2012 Olympic bid. On July 6, the committee will make its final decision. In the previous round of the committee’s evaluation process, New York’s stadium-centric bid received high marks in the “venues” evaluation category, right up there with London and Paris. But for fundamentals like “transportation” and “environment,” New York ranked at the bottom of the list.In the words of the committee: “New York has considerable air and noise pollution from vehicular traffic.” “Hear, hear,” replied a chorus of asthmatic children, neighbors whose streets are overrun with illegal truck traffic, and tourists spilling off over-crowded sidewalks into traffic. The committee now wants to know: What else, besides a stadium, does Mayor Bloomberg have to offer? For ideas, Mayor Mike need look no further than the sensible plans put forth by the three cities said to be leading the race for the 2012 Olympics.Paris will expand the Metro, build 49.7 miles of new bike paths and buy 20,000 bicycles for athletes and officials to use for transportation during the games.Madrid is planning the world’s first “Car Free” Olympic Games based on major transit and pedestrian improvements and a new network of bikeways.London is hoping its congestion-busting road pricing system and fast bus system are enough to sway the judges. If that doesn't work, London's creative “Active Spectator” program might. It aims to “encourage access to Olympic venues by bicycle and on foot, with a safe network of cycle paths and footpaths.”It is not too late for Bloomberg to think “outside the stadium.”By providing ample funding for our subways and buses, by expanding our pedestrian and cycle network and by taming traffic, he can make New York a contender.
