Following the death of four cyclists in a month, bicycle activists blasted the city for not doing enough to protect and promote safe cycling.
Transportation Alternatives president Paul White says the city's bicycle master plan is 10 years old and only 15 percent done, while other big cities like London and Chicago are making great strides.
White: It was a one year ago after a spate of similar tragedies that we stood here and called on Mayor Bloomberg to do more. We are here today again because not enough has been done.
In a statement the Department of Transportation says it's shocked by the deaths, but blames the city's crowded streets. It says motorists need to be made more aware of cyclists and it will team up with Transportation Alternatives to launch a bicycle safety campaign.
