I want to extend my highest compliments to the Eagle on your inspiring September 13 editorial entitled "Brooklyn Broadside: Streetscapes Must Be Modernized" by Dennis Holt. You are certainly correct in noting that the present design of our city's streets fails to meet the demands of New York City in 2007.The real solutions you recommend are exactly what Brooklyn needs. Reducing traffic by narrowing roadways, increasing pedestrian friendly sidewalk space, adopting congestion pricing, using residential parking permits, and improving streetscapes with park benches and more green space are all part of a grand solution for Brooklyn and our entire city.Will implementing these changes be easy? No. But what is wrong with thinking big? I am reminded of the words of John F. Kennedy who, when speaking in 1962 about the unprecedented challenge of landing a man on the moon, said, "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills; because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone."The challenge of transforming New York City's streets into ones that meet 21st century demands and modern perspectives on urban living certainly qualifies as one of the difficult "other things" JFK urged us to embrace.It is an important start that a newspaper like the Brooklyn Daily Eagle wants our city to aggressively confront the challenge of improving our streets.
