This video, posted by Streetsblog, a project of the New York City Streets Renaissance shows some great examples of why New York needs make an effort to take care of those of us who bike in the city. Given the density of the city, biking is an ideal form of transportation, but unless you're willing to risk your neck, biking is not often a viable option. The video exemplifies how other cities, all around the world, are bike friendly, and how NYC needs to get with the program.I recall my first biking experience in NYC, flying down 3rd Avenue was both exhilirating and terrifying. Remeber that old Nintendo game from the 80's, Paperboy? Dodging hazards on a bike in NYC is just like playing that game - avoiding car doors, sneaking across intersections between cabs, keeping an eye out for pedestrians about to step off the sidewalk, dodging busses, cars, trucks...I love it. But, I also fear for my safety and have had a couple near misses, which often deters me from pedaling my way around the city, despite the speed, convienience, and environmentally friendly commute that biking provides. If you also believe that a healthy city is one that is nice to bikers, check out Transportation Alternatives website, and join the cause to make our city a place where bikes and cars can peacefully co-exist.
