FIBORO BRIDGES

Jamaica Bay Bridges

Jamaica Bay is a large body of water which separates the peninsula of the Rockaways from the part of Long Island on which sit Brooklyn and Queens. It is spanned by two bridges, the Marine Parkway bridge and the Cross Bay complex, and several other bridges cross the inlets along its shores. This section proceeds from West to East along the shore of the bay.

Comment from a Web site visitor (April 25, 2002):

"In the introductory paragraph it might be nice to mention that almost all of Jamaica Bay is the only wildlife refuge managed by the National Park Service (most of the others are managed by Forest Service, or other agencies), and is part of Gateway National Recreation Area. It makes up about 9,000 acres of the over 26,000 acres of Gateway. For a map, go to http://www.nps.gov/carto/PDF/GATEmap1.pdf

There is also the Rockaway Gateway Greenway route, that travels around and through much of the bay. A map of that may be found at http://www.nps.gov/carto/PDF/GATE-we2.pdf

Bergen Beach and the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy (equestrian), Canarsie Beach and particularly Canarsie Pier, Plumb Beach, Spring Creek park, mentioned in the bridge blurbs are all part of Gateway NRA as well."

This bridge wins the Fiboro Award for Best Bridge, for its three non-car lanes on each side. It carries Cross Bay Boulevard across Grassy Bay from Howard Beach to the Rulers Bar Hassock, on the way to the Rockaways.

Howard Beach entrance: Cross Bay Boulevard at 165th Avenue.
