Message Body: I urge you to support bus camera enforcement in New York City, as included in the Governor's Executive Budget. New York City's buses—carrying 2.5 million people every day -- are the slowest in the Nation. On average, buses travel at 7mph, with some lines crawling along at 3mph during rush hour. Bus riders deserve better. City buses are so slow because they must compete with cars and trucks parked in their lane, and are forced to swerve in and out of traffic to pick up and drop off passengers. Bus cameras enforce existing bus lane rules and keep these lanes clear. Bus cameras have been highly successful in other cities, including London, where bus cameras saved commuters an average of 10 minutes per trip. Bus cameras are also a smart choice in a tough budget year. Not only do they pay for themselves, but bus cameras reduce the strain on the NYPD. Patrick Lynch of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association recently described staffing levels at the NYPD as at the "breaking point."
