This critical piece of legislation will empower local communities citywide to advocate for and win safer streets by making crucial traffic-related statistics -- information already collected by the NYPD -- publicly available, just like they already do with many other offenses. Knowledge is power and communities armed with this data about moving violations, traffic crashes, contributing factors like talking on a cell phone or speeding, and fatalities will be better able to call for improvements using more than just anecdotal evidence. Instead, real data could be brought to bear to help support requests for safer streets. This bill will also, of course, help elected officials like yourself better advocate on behalf of your constituents.
