Of course the biggest story on the streets right now is the driver who slaughtered two children in Brooklyn:
A driver struck and killed two children, ages three and five, on 9th Street at Fifth Avenue in Park Slope this afternoon, according to police. At least one other person was injured in the crash. The driver is currently in NYPD custody at the scene of the collision.
They also report that the driver, Dorothy Bruns of Staten Island, has a "medical condition:"
Bruns told police she had a medical condition, and she was taken to Lutheran Hospital.
And claims that she was innocently trying to get a jump on the light like a drag racer when--oopsie!--she hit the gas by mistake and tore two families apart:
She told officers that she was creeping up a bit at the intersection in anticipation of the red light changing and then accidentally hit the accelerator, sources said.
Police sources said Bruns would not be held and was free to go, at least for now.
Yes, that's right, free to go after admitting guilt--though reports from the scene tell it differently:
apparently the driver increased speed as she drove through a light— Leah Finnegan (@leahfinnegan) March 5, 2018
And video shows her driving right through the red:
#Update #Brooklyn. 1 yr old Josh Lew killed, his mom also hit, she’ll be ok. 4 yr old Abbigail Blumenstein killed, her mom, who’s pregnant, also hit, will be ok. Video of driver in white car at red light, moves forward, speeds up, hits group No charges at this hour. @ABC7NY pic.twitter.com/yJ709fUMkl— Kemberly Richardson (@kemrichardson7) March 6, 2018
The Times handled the story a bit differently, making it sound like the driver was at the mercy of "the Volvo," as though the Swedish automobile had somehow attained sentience:
The 44-year-old woman who was driving the car that hit the people did not flee, Mr. Davis said. She suffered minor injuries, officials said, after her 2012 Volvo continued onward after hitting the pedestrians until it struck some parked cars.
Police will examine both the driver and "the Volvo," presumably to determine if either of them have a brain:
He said there was video of the Volvo, either stopped or rolling very slowly on Ninth Street, “inexplicably” beginning to move forward at Fifth Avenue, though the light was still apparently red.
“All of a sudden, it looks like it just starts to accelerate, striking the people in the other side of the intersection,” said Mr. Davis. “They’re going to do a mechanical check of the car; they are doing a physical check of her. It’s going to take a while to figure it out.”
"Inexplicably," really? "Figure it out," you say? Wow. Well here's a clue:
Perhaps there's a connection between her running a light and her established history of running lights.
Anyway, given where this happened it was hard not to consider the possible proximity of the mayor:
Sickening. Maddening. My neighborhood. Family and friends walk these streets daily. I simply despise NYC car culture and the incredible impunity and entitlement of NYC drivers. Wonder if @NYCMayor was working out just up the block at the Y when this happened. https://t.co/pHC0Fw2xa3— Aaron Naparstek (@Naparstek) March 5, 2018
Who had this to say:
De Blasio says the Park Slope crash is personal—that he and he family have crossed the intersection many times:— Vincent Barone (@vinbarone) March 5, 2018
“I will state the obvious this loss of life is tragic and painful…it’s another reminder of why we have to redouble our efforts on Vision Zero.”
I'm not sure even quadrupling them would be enough, since you're welcome to speed through school zones and run lights just as long as you're willing to pay a modest premium. That's why drivers feel entitled to do things like this:
If anyone in Brooklyn near the intersection of Washington Ave and Atlantic Ave just saw a Hasidic man in a grey van try to hit a woman and her baby in a stroller as she crossed a crosswalk, honking and touching the stroller with the car’s bumper, please DM me. That woman was me.— Amber Tamblyn (@ambertamblyn) March 4, 2018
On top of all this, advocates have been calling attention to this deadly intersection for years:
In 2006 the NYC DOT decided to prioritize center turning lanes at expense of #bikenyc at 5th Ave/9th Street eliminating the the bike lane for 2 blocks. I was angry so I made this video about it. @StreetsblogNYC @BrooklynSpoke @HildaBikes @BrooklynSpoke @Naparstek @transalt @ny1 pic.twitter.com/dJ7Qjk0fhR— Streetfilms (Now 900 videos!) Now you can join the growing group of people who will confront the mayor at the Y this morning:
Okay, folks. 8:30 AM tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at the Park Slope YMCA on 9th Street. Please come to ask the mayor directly what he's going to do about this street. https://t.co/3z65Igv7aL— Brooklyn Spoke (@BrooklynSpoke) March 5, 2018
In other news, people marched for protected bike lanes on Skillman and 43rd Avenues in Queens last Sunday and unsurprisingly nobody threw blood on Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer:
"Fringe group" indeed.
