When complete, the Harbor Ring would generate tourism and foster economic activity, offer unprecedented recreational and active-living opportunities, increase commuting options for thousands of New York and New Jersey residents, and further establish the region as one of the nation’s most walkable and most bike-friendly.
The biggest obstacle to completing the Harbor Ring is the lack of pedestrian and bicycle pathways over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is the main missing link in the Harbor Ring route. You can only cross the bridge under your own power twice a year, during the Five Boro Bike Tour and the New York City Marathon, and then only on the main roadways which are closed to car traffic during those events.
Can it be done?Yes! In 2013, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) commissioned the engineering firm of WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff to develop their Master Plan for their renovation of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. In 2015, the MTA presented preliminary results of the study confirming that the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge can indeed structurally support the addition of a pedestrian and bicycle path. The final results of this study are expected to be released sometime in 2016.
Transportation Alternatives joins the Harbor Ring Committee in calling on the MTA to include pedestrian and bicycle paths as part of their Master Plan for this world-famous bridge. Together we can advocate for a completed Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that everyone can use and enjoy.
