Campaign History
For the large number of New Yorkers visiting the hundreds of shops and restaurants along Amsterdam Avenue, the street is dangerously crowded. Between 1995 and 2005, drivers injured more than 800 New Yorkers there, making Amsterdam Avenue easily one of the most dangerous streets on the Upper West Side. T.A.’s Manhattan Activist Committee is calling for expanded open, safe space for people to walk freely on Amsterdam Avenue and clear lanes for bicycles and buses. In January of 2016, after years of campaigning from hundreds of local residents, Community Board 7 voted in favor of a redesign of Amsterdam Avenue. Changes to the street, including a protected bike lane, were completed by June 2016.
