Tell Mayor de Blasio: It’s Time to Invest in Safe, Secure Bike Parking
New York City desperately needs more bicycle parking. The lack of bike parking in our city is far from a minor inconvenience — the shortfall contributes to rampant bike theft, disincentivizes biking relative to other modes of transportation, and perpetuates transit inequalities.
#BRIDGES4PEOPLE
The East River bridges, bike paths, and pedestrian paths are too dangerously overcrowded to safely walk and bike on. Pedestrians, cyclists, runners — we all need more space!
build a network of protected bike lanes
We are calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio and our City Council members to quickly build a citywide network of protected bike lanes that serves all New Yorkers.
EXPAND #OPENSTREETS
Mayor de Blasio must immediately expand the size and scope of the Open Streets program to protect New Yorkers’ public health and aid in New York City’s recovery.
Support Protected Bike Lanes and Busways
As New York City reopens, it’s imperative that the city builds the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the growth of cycling, and to increase bus speeds. We’ve seen what happens when even a quarter of workers decide to commute by car: dangerous conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, buses crawling through traffic, and increasing pollution. Even a slight increase of vehicles in our streets would be catastrophic to all New Yorkers.
Mayor De Blasio, DO SOMETHING About Traffic Violence
Since Mayor de Blasio took office, more than 1,000 pedestrians, cyclists, e‑bike and e‑scooter riders have died, a far cry from the goals of the Vision Zero program. More people were killed while biking in September 2020 than in any other month since Vision Zero began.
Reallocate NYPD Funding to Create Self-Enforcing Streets
We demand the reallocation of a portion of the NYPD budget to the DOT. We can reduce the need for armed police traffic enforcement by creating infrastructural solutions, like “self-enforcing” street redesigns and automated enforcement. This is a more effective way to make streets safe and will help protect people of color from racial bias.
Bike Match
In New York City, bicycles are essential transportation for many who need to get around during the coronavirus outbreak. We are connecting New Yorkers who have an extra bicycle to New Yorkers who need one.

Legalize e-bikes
“Transportation Alternatives applauds Governor Cuomo and the state legislature for including the legalization of e-bikes and e-scooters in the state budget.”
