Community and DOT Create Canal Street Park

In a victory for the community, this triangle at the western end of Canal Street- a long time no-man's land and a recent garbage truck parking lot- will be reclaimed for a full-scale park as part of the State's reconstruction of Route 9A. The park will extend east through the intersection of Canal and Washington Streets, and will do away with the left-hand turn from Washington onto Canal Street. This will make the intersection much safer, we hope, and eliminate Washington Street as a shortcut to Route 9A. Kudos to the Canal West Coalition, Sam Schwartz Company, Tribeca Community Association, Community Board 2, Council Member Kathryn Freed, and City and State DOTs for supporting this important project.
