Internships

Open Street Transportation Alternatives (T.A.), New York City’s leading advocacy group for bicycling, walking and public transit, seeks energetic and self-motivated students for their 2013 Internship Program.

Interns will be exposed to the ins and outs of social change, New York City government and politics and a career in the non-profit sector through individual and group projects alongside T.A. staff. Highlights of the summer include:
  • T.A.’s 40th Anniversary celebrations
  • Brown Bag Seminars with T.A. staff members
  • Fieldtrips with the senior T.A. staff
  • Free entry to ride in T.A.’s New York City Century Bike Tour
Each intern will be assigned to a staff member or department within T.A. to assist with projects and day-to-day operations. These projects include campaign outreach, data collection and entry, writing, and archiving—all instrumental in running successful campaigns. The cohort of interns will also collaborate on a group project to put their learning into practice.

Alongside their work within our office walls, T.A. interns will be brought in to the world of T.A. outside the office and in our communities across the city. Interns will experience a comprehensive curriculum led by our Deputy Director that explores T.A. activism through readings, movie nights, and field trips. Interns will regularly meet with experts on our staff to learn about T.A.'s advocacy and organizing work to help New Yorkers improve our streets.

The internship curriculum runs for 8 weeks. (July 1st through August 23th, 2013).

T.A. offers full-time paid internship positions for high school students during the 8 week curriculum period. Summer high school interns will receive a stipend of $2171.75 for the program in equal disbursements throughout the summer.

Part-time positions (16-20 hours/week) for college students are unpaid, though interns are eligible for a small transportation stipend for 2 months. Internship length is flexible (8-12 weeks). T.A. is happy to work with college students to facilitate earning academic credit and/or qualifying for public/civic service stipend programs at your school.

We are interested in students who can demonstrate:
  • Passion for T.A.’s mission to make New York City’s streets safer for everyone
  • Interest in cities and/or environmental sustainability (interest in transportation preferable)
  • Interest in working with New York City communities, community-based organizations and/or government
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative (in independent and group work)
  • Adobe Creative Suite, Google Sketch-up and/or GIS skills are a plus
We are no longer accepting applications for this program.
