Take Action Now: Lift the Restrictions that Shut Down NYC’s Speed Safety Cameras Every Night

Every night at 10 p.m., due to state law, every speed safety camera in New York City is shut off and remains off until 6 a.m. On weekends, it’s worse — the law requires speed safety cameras to be switched off for 56 hours straight — from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Right now, Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets are fighting to lift the restrictions on New York City’s speed safety cameras, so New Yorkers are protected from speeding drivers every hour of every day. We’ve only got 11 days left to change this law. Will you help?

TAKE ACTION

Here are two actions that you can take right now!

  1. Sign the petition: Add your name to this petition. We’ll send the message to Governor Hochul, Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and your state legislators, asking them to support 24/7 speed safety cameras.

  2. Get on the phone: Call Governor Hochul (518-474-8390), Speaker Heastie (518-455-3791), Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins (518-455-2715) and tell them you want 24/7 speed safety cameras. Here's what you can say, “I want New York City’s streets protected from speeding drivers every hour, every day. Please reauthorize the speed safety camera program without restrictions on times and days of operation."

Today, state law requires that New York City’s speed safety cameras be switched off for more than half the hours in any given week. Nearly 60 percent of traffic fatalities occur when speed safety cameras are prevented from operating.

New Yorkers need to be protected from speeding drivers 24/7/365. Please, take action now!
