Campaign History

With tens of thousands of riders passing through daily, the St George Ferry Terminal serves as a central link between Staten Island and the rest of NYC. No Staten Islander should need to worry about their safety when approaching the heart of our booming North Shore, but for pedestrians and cyclists, getting to the ferry is a harrowing experience at best. At an intersection where six lanes of vehicular traffic merge into two heavily trafficked streets, the safety of cyclists and pedestrians has been ignored for too long. With the opening of several major new developments such as Empire Outlets, Lighthouse Point and the New York Wheel right around the corner, the entrance to the St George Ferry Terminal at the intersection of Bay Street and Richmond Terrace is long overdo for safety enhancements.

Since 2012, the intersection of Bay Street and Richmond Terrace has been been the site of 71 documented traffic crashes, resulting in a dozen injuries. The heart of our transportation system should make Staten Islanders feel safe and welcome, not endangered. Staten Islanders deserve safe access to the St George Ferry Terminal.
